Nicolo Bulega left Portugal with a perfect race weekend. The Superbike World Championship 2026 visited Estoril from 9 to 11 October and Aruba. The Ducati rider won Race 1, the Superpole Race, and Race 2. His win in Race 2 was his 29th of the season, and his 664 points make this the most successful season in WorldSBK history.
The weekend had more to it than one rider's dominance. Alberto Surra stood on the podium in all three races. Alvaro Bautista lost a podium with a crash five laps from home. Yari Montella survived a bad Saturday and came back on Sunday to move closer to third place in the championship.
Our Estoril preview and how to watch guide named the win record, third place, and Oliveira's home round as the main questions. The section below shows how each one was answered.
This report covers qualifying for each race, the full results, and the updated standings.
Estoril Results at a Glance
Ducati riders filled the podium in every race. Bulega and Lecuona took first and second in all three, and Surra took third in each race.

| Race 1 | Nicolo Bulega | Iker Lecuona | Alberto Surra |
| Superpole Race | Nicolo Bulega | Iker Lecuona | Alberto Surra |
| Race 2 | Nicolo Bulega | Iker Lecuona | Alberto Surra |
Ducati's win in the Superpole Race was its 36th in a row, a new record for the series. The Ducati run goes back to Race 2 at Estoril in 2025.
How the Weekend Works
A WorldSBK round has three races. Race 1 takes place on Saturday. The Superpole Race and Race 2 both take place on Sunday. If you are new to motorcycle racing, our guide on how MotoGP classes and race weekends work explains the basics.
Superpole is a qualifying session that sets the starting grid. The fastest rider takes pole position for Race 1 and the Superpole Race.
Points are awarded in all three races. Race 1 and Race 2 pay 25 points to the winner, then 20, 16, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 down to 15th place. The Superpole Race is shorter and pays points to the top nine only: 12, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.
That is why a clean sweep is worth 62 points in one weekend. Bulega scored 25 in Race 1, 12 in the Superpole Race, and 25 in Race 2.
World Superbike Schedule and Start Times
The table shows the main sessions in local time, with conversions for the USA, the UK, and Australia. Portugal and the UK were on the same clock in October, so their times match.

Superpole: Bulega Goes Under 1m in 34s
Qualifying set the tone. Bulega took pole and became the first rider in WorldSBK history to lap Estoril in under 1m34s. His time was 1:33.884.
Lecuona qualified second on 1:34.041 and was the only rider within half a second of his teammate. Alex Lowes took third.
Behind them, the order was close. Surra qualified fourth, the first time that weekend he had been outside the top three. Oliveira was fifth and Montella sixth. Montella managed only one full run. A technical problem on the outlap of his second run left him too late to start another timed lap.
Jake Dixon was seventh, his best WorldSBK qualifying result so far. Sam Lowes, Gerloff, and Bautista filled out the next rows, with Sam Lowes tenth, Gerloff eleventh, and Bautista twelfth.

The pace had been visible on Friday. Bulega led the first practice session at 1:35.546, with Surra only 0.052 seconds behind and Lecuona third. On Sunday morning, Lecuona topped the warm-up by 0.010 seconds from Bulega, and those two were the only riders to lap in the 1m34s bracket.
Race 1 Report
Bulega started from pole, but he did not stay in front for long. Lecuona braked very late at the first corner, and that gap let Alex Lowes move into second place. Bulega lost the lead.
He took it back quickly. He answered with two passes at turn one on consecutive laps, and he led again by the start of lap three. After that, he built a gap and did not look back.
He won by almost four seconds, which gave him his 27th win of the season. That equalled the record Alvaro Bautista set in 2023. The official margin was 3.870 seconds.
Lecuona finished second. The fight for third was between Surra and Miguel Oliveira. Surra held the place, and it was his first podium in a full-length WorldSBK race. He finished 5.798 seconds behind Lecuona. Oliveira, the home rider, took fourth and kept Alex Lowes behind him to the flag. Lowes finished fifth.
Lorenzo Baldassarri took sixth, ahead of Axel Bassani in seventh.
Montella's race was the most eventful one in the middle of the field. He tried to pass Baldassarri on the inside at turn three, and the two touched when their lines met at the second apex. Montella lost a wing and dropped to 12th. He recovered to finish eighth, only 0.033 seconds behind Bassani. The result cost him just three points against Alex Lowes in the race for third in the championship.
Bautista finished ninth and Gerloff tenth. Stefano Manzi fell on the penultimate lap, remounted, and finished last. He was the only rider to crash.
Superpole Race Report
Sunday morning's Superpole Race began with a change at the front. Lecuona launched better than Bulega and led the opening laps.
Then came the mistake that decided the race. On lap three, Lecuona lost control under braking for turn one and ran wide. He rejoined ahead of Oliveira, but he could not get back to Bulega. Lecuona said afterwards that unpredictable wind played a part.
Bulega won by 0.734 seconds and set a new race lap record of 1:34.525. It was his 28th win of the season, which made him the first rider to win 28 races in a single year.
The last lap changed third place. Oliveira was running third, but Surra passed him at turn three with much better rear grip. Bautista took fifth and Bassani sixth.
There was also contact at the start. Alex Lowes and Montella touched at the first turn. Montella fell to 13th, and Lowes dropped to the back. Both riders were out of points in this race.
Race 2 Report
Bulega and Lecuona started the final race as the two riders to beat. The race ran for 21 laps, and Bulega's winning time was 33:28.170.
Lecuona pushed hard early. He stayed within a second of Bulega for the first five laps. After that, Bulega eased clear. Lecuona finished second, 4.888 seconds behind.
Bulega's win completed another sweep. It was his 10th triple of the season and the 12th of his career, which is a new record.
The late drama came from the fight for third. Bautista was third with five laps to go, and he was slowly pulling away from Surra. Then he crashed at turn one. Surra moved up and held third to the flag. That gave him a podium in all three races.
Montella had been in the middle of the pack all weekend, but Race 2 was his best of the three. He finished fourth, which mattered because Alex Lowes crashed out and Sam Lowes finished only 15th. Bassani took fifth. Baldassarri was sixth and Gerloff seventh.
Oliveira finished eighth, Xavi Vierge ninth, and Dixon tenth. Four riders did not finish: Bautista, Alex Lowes, Andrea Locatelli, and Loris Baz.
Further back, there were good recoveries. Remy Gardner started 16th and finished 12th. Manzi started 20th and finished 14th. Both scored points for the GYTR GRT Yamaha team.

Rider Standings After Estoril
The WorldSBK standings changed little at the top, but the middle of the table moved a lot.
Bulega had already clinched the title at Cremona on 27 September. After Race 1, his lead over Lecuona was 138 points. After Race 2, the gap was 146 points, with Bulega on 664 and Lecuona on 518.
The fight for third place leans toward Montella. He now has 290 points. He is 53 points ahead of Alex Lowes, with only 62 points left to win at the final round. Jerez has three races, and a clean sweep pays 62 points. Montella is not yet safe, but Lowes needs a near-perfect weekend and a poor one from Montella.
Fourth to seventh is tight. Alex Lowes has 237 points, Sam Lowes 225, Baldassarri 214 and Bassani 208. That is a spread of just 29 points, so all four can still change places at Jerez.

How the Preview Questions Were Answered
Our preview asked six questions before the weekend. Here is what happened to each one.
| Question before Estoril | What happened |
|---|---|
| Can Bulega reach the win record? He had 26 wins, and the record was 27. | He equalled the record in Race 1 with his 27th win. He broke it in the Superpole Race with a 28th. Race 2 made it 29. |
| Would Lecuona answer after his Cremona sweep? | He was second in all three races. He led the Superpole Race early before his mistake at turn one. |
| Could Montella clinch third? He led Alex Lowes by 43 points. | He did not clinch it. He now leads by 53 points, with 62 left at the final round. |
| How would Oliveira do at his home round? | He finished fourth in Race 1, fourth in the Superpole Race and eighth in Race 2. He scored 27 points and moved from 12th to 11th in the standings. |
| Could Bautista improve his position? | He finished ninth in Race 1 and fifth in the Superpole Race, then crashed from third in Race 2. |
| Would Gardner race after his hand injury? | Yes. He finished 15th in Race 1 and the Superpole Race, then 12th in Race 2. |
Bulega had lost all three Cremona races to Lecuona. At Estoril he won every race, so he answered that run straight away.
Key Riders and Storylines
Nicolo Bulega
The champion made the weekend look simple, but he had to fight for it in Race 1 after losing the lead at the first corner. He then added the Superpole Race, with a new race lap record, and Race 2. He finished with 29 wins this season and a record 12 career triples. In qualifying, he also became the first rider to lap Estoril in under 1m34s. Estoril and Jerez are his last two rounds in WorldSBK before he moves to MotoGP.
Iker Lecuona
Lecuona was the closest challenger in every session. He topped Sunday warm-up, led the Superpole Race early and stayed within a second of Bulega for five laps of Race 2. He finished second in all three races. His one big mistake, at turn one in the Superpole Race, probably cost him a win.
Alberto Surra
Surra is the weekend's biggest improver. He started it second in first practice, took his first long-race podium in Race 1 and finished third in all three races. His pass on Oliveira on the last lap of the Superpole Race showed his rear grip in the closing stages. He stands eighth in the championship on 179 points.
Yari Montella
Montella had the weekend's biggest swings. He lost time in qualifying with a technical problem, then damaged his bike in the Race 1 contact with Baldassarri, and then collided with Alex Lowes in the Superpole Race. He still finished eighth in Race 1 and fourth in Race 2, and he leads the fight for third place by 53 points.
Alex Lowes
Lowes qualified third and ran second early in Race 1. He finished fifth, then lost ground to the Superpole Race contact and crashed out of Race 2. His gap to Montella grew from 40 points after Race 1 to 53 points after Race 2.
Álvaro Bautista
Bautista finished ninth in Race 1 and fifth in the Superpole Race. In Race 2 he was third and pulling clear when he crashed at turn one. That crash cost him a podium and left him tenth in the standings on 137 points.
Miguel Oliveira
The Portuguese rider had a strong home weekend. He qualified fifth, finished fourth in Race 1 and fourth in the Superpole Race, then eighth in Race 2. He has 136 points and sits one place behind Bautista in eleventh.
Jake Dixon and the other Honda riders
Dixon qualified seventh, which was his best WorldSBK qualifying result so far. He finished 12th in Race 1, eighth in the Superpole Race and tenth in Race 2.
Garrett Gerloff
Gerloff was the leading Kawasaki WorldSBK Team rider. He finished tenth and then seventh in the two main races.
Remy Gardner and Stefano Manzi
The GYTR GRT Yamaha pair scored points in Race 2 after starting 16th and 20th. Gardner had been declared unfit at Cremona with a hand injury, so his return to the points was a good sign for the team. Manzi had fallen in Race 1, so his 14th place in Race 2 was a clean recovery.

About Estoril
Estoril is on the Portuguese coast, close to Lisbon and Cascais. It has been on the WorldSBK calendar since 2020. The track is 4.182 km long with 13 corners.
Braking into turn one is the main passing place. That is where Lecuona went wide in the Superpole Race, where Lowes and Montella touched, and where Bautista crashed in Race 2.
Oliveira is from Almada, a short drive from the circuit, and the home crowd followed him all weekend. Bulega has now won Race 2 at Estoril two years in a row, and Ducati took all three races this year. You can read more about the Estoril race history and previous winners in our preview.
Portugal also hosts the World Surf League Portugal 2026 event later this month.
