The World Triathlon Cup Beijing 2026 is the next major stop for elite triathletes on 17 October. The race takes place at Yanqi Lake and runs over the standard distance. World Triathlon added Beijing as a new host city on the 2026 World Cup calendar, after approval by its Executive Board.

This guide covers what you need before race day: the date, the venue, the format, the time zones, how to watch and the athletes worth following. It also lists the 2026 World Cup results so far, the WTCS final results and the Olympic qualification points on offer. Beijing carries weight in the sport because the city hosted the triathlon at the 2008 Olympic Games.

World Triathlon lists the event as the 2026 World Triathlon Cup Beijing at Yanqi Lake, China, on 17 October 2026. Its live timing page describes it as a World Cup, Triathlon, Standard event. You can check the official page at triathlon.org.

The event has no defending champion because this is the first World Triathlon Cup in Beijing on the 2026 calendar. Nobody arrives with a title to protect. The winners will become the first names in the Beijing World Cup record for this edition.

Why Beijing Matters in Triathlon History

Beijing is a familiar name for anyone who follows the sport. Triathlon has a long link with the city, and the 2026 race adds a new chapter.

The Test Events Before 2008

Beijing hosted World Cup races well before the Olympic Games. In 2005, the best triathletes in the world gathered near the Ming Tombs north of Beijing for a World Cup. That race brought together the top-ranked men and women of the time.

The 2007 World Cup in Beijing served as the test event for the 2008 Olympic Games. It used Olympic standard operations and a tested Olympic course. Organisers adjusted the cycling course after the previous year's race.

The 2008 Olympic Triathlon

The 2008 Olympic triathlon remains the most famous race in Beijing's triathlon story. Jan Frodeno of Germany won the men's gold. Simon Whitfield of Canada won silver, and Bevan Docherty of New Zealand won bronze.

In the women's race, Emma Snowsill of Australia won gold. Vanessa Fernandes of Portugal took silver and Emma Moffatt of Australia took bronze.

The 2011 Grand Final

Beijing returned to the calendar after 2008. The city hosted the WTCS Grand Final in 2011, and the 2026 World Cup marks the return of top-tier triathlon to the city for the first time since that event. That is a gap of about fifteen years.

A Different Race in 2024

Beijing also hosted a separate event outside the World Triathlon system. Challenge Beijing was a non-drafting Olympic distance race on 8 September 2024, held in Yanqing with US$100,000 in prize money. It used a different organiser and different rules, so it is not part of the World Triathlon Cup record.

Yanqi Lake and Beijing: Venue and City Facts

Yanqi Lake is the venue for the 2026 race. The lake sits in Huairou District, northeast of central Beijing, and the area is known as a resort and conference district. It also hosted the APEC leaders' meeting in 2014.

Yanqi Lake is a different location from the 2008 Olympic triathlon, which was held near the Ming Tombs. Athletes who raced in Beijing during the Olympic cycle will find a new course. Water-based racing runs through the autumn calendar in other sports too, as you can read in our 2026 Canoe Slalom World Cup Final coverage.

Course maps, water temperature and wetsuit status were not available when this article was written. Check the official athlete guide and the World Triathlon event page before you plan around any detail.

About Beijing

Beijing is the capital of China and one of the largest cities in the world, with more than 21 million residents. It is the first city to host both the Summer Olympic Games (2008) and the Winter Olympic Games (2022). That record gives it a long list of sports venues and deep experience with major events.

The Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and sections of the Great Wall are within reach of the capital. Mid October falls in autumn, when the weather in northern China is usually cool and dry. Check a forecast close to race day for exact conditions.

Standard Distance Format Explained

The Beijing World Cup uses the standard distance. This is the same distance used in the Olympic Games. Each athlete swims, rides a bike, and then runs, with fast transitions between each part.

DisciplineStandard distanceSprint distance
Swim1.5 km750 m
Bike40 km20 km
Run10 km5 km

The Rome World Cup on 3 October used the sprint distance. The standard distance in Beijing is twice that length in each discipline.

This difference matters for results. The longer swim spreads the field more. The 40 km bike gives packs time to form or break apart. The 10 km run then decides who has energy left. A strong runner can recover lost ground, but a rider who builds a gap can protect it.

The standard distance covers 51.5 km in total.

How Elite Triathlon Races Work

Elite World Cup races allow drafting on the bike. Athletes can ride in a pack and share the effort. This differs from long-distance races such as Ironman, where drafting is banned. Draft legal racing creates tactical decisions. Groups work together, attackers try to break away, and the final result often depends on the run. Pack riding also decides road cycling races, and you can see the same tactics in our 2026 UCI Road World Championships Montreal guide.

Transitions count as part of the race. The first transition moves the athlete from swim to bike, and the second moves from bike to run. A slow transition can cost a place in the pack.

Women and men race separately in this World Cup. The World Triathlon event page lists separate women's and men's races for Beijing on TriathlonLive.

Race Day Schedule and Time Zones

The race takes place on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Official start times for the men's and women's races were not available when this article was written. Information on the order of the two races is also not currently available.

Beijing uses China Standard Time, which is UTC+8. China does not use daylight saving time. The table shows how far Beijing is ahead of major English-speaking cities on 17 October 2026.

LocationTime zone on 17 OctoberTime difference
London, UKBST (UTC+1)Beijing is 7 hours ahead
New York or TorontoEDT (UTC-4)Beijing is 12 hours ahead
Los Angeles or VancouverPDT (UTC-7)Beijing is 15 hours ahead
Sydney or MelbourneAEDT (UTC+11)Sydney is 3 hours ahead

Here is an example, not a confirmed start time. A race that starts at 10:00 in Beijing would begin at 03:00 in London and at 22:00 the evening before in New York. Many viewers in the UK and North America will need an early alarm or a replay.

Check the official schedule on the day. World Triathlon usually publishes final start times in the athlete guide and on the event page close to race day.

How to Watch the Beijing World Cup

You have two main ways to follow the race.

TriathlonLive. World Triathlon streams its races on TriathlonLive, and the Beijing event page links to both the women's and men's race streams. The service is priced from $11.99 per month or $49.99 per year. Prices can change, so check the official site before you subscribe. The service also holds replays, which help viewers in time zones far from Beijing.

Live timing on triathlon.org. The World Triathlon live timing page carries real-time results and splits for the Beijing elite men and elite women. This is the best option when you cannot watch video. You can follow swim exits, bike packs and run positions as they happen.

Information on national television coverage for the UK, USA, Canada and Australia is not currently available. If a broadcaster is confirmed, the event page is the place to find it.

Athletes to Watch

The official start list had not been published when this article was written. No athlete is confirmed for Beijing. The names below come from 2026 World Cup and Championship Series results and show who is active at this level. Do not treat them as entries.

Men

  • Alex Yee (GBR). The Olympic champion won the Rome World Cup after a strong 5 km run, his first international win since returning from a marathon detour. He came out of the swim outside the top 40 and about 40 seconds behind, then worked his way back. He also finished third at the WTCS Grand Final in Pontevedra. A 10 km run suits his strength.
  • Vasco Vilaça (POR). Vilaça won his first world title in 2026 by finishing second at the Pontevedra Grand Final. He is a rider and runner who can handle both the bike pack and a fast finish.
  • Matthew Hauser (AUS). Hauser won the Pontevedra Grand Final in a sprint finish against Vilaça. Both men were given 1:39:31.
  • Ricardo Batista (POR). Batista finished fourth at the Grand Final, one second behind Yee.
  • Oliver Conway (GBR) and Tyler Mislawchuk (CAN). Conway won the Haikou World Cup in China and Mislawchuk won in Huatulco for the third time. Mislawchuk also took bronze in Chengdu.
  • Luke Willian (AUS) and David Cantero (ESP). Willian won the Chengdu World Cup by one second. Cantero won the season opener in Lanzarote.

Women

  • Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA). Beaugrand won all five of her WTCS starts in 2026 and reclaimed the world title.
  • Diana Isakova (AIN). Isakova won the Haikou and Rome World Cups. AIN is the code for Individual Neutral Athletes.
  • Tilda MÃ¥nsson (SWE). MÃ¥nsson won WTCS Yokohama this year and finished second in Rome.
  • Laura Lindemann (GER). Lindemann won the Chengdu World Cup in a three-way sprint and took bronze in Lanzarote. She is a Paris 2024 Olympic relay champion.
  • Taylor Knibb (USA). Knibb won the Edmonton World Cup and reached the podium in Tiszaujvaros.
  • Fanni Szalai (HUN). The junior world champion won Tiszaujvaros with a breakaway. She missed Rome through illness, so her Beijing entry is not confirmed.
  • Kate Waugh and Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR). Both reached the Grand Final podium in Pontevedra. Waugh also took bronze in Chengdu after a dominant T100 season.
  • Taylor Spivey (USA). Spivey finished eighth in the final WTCS standings and reached the podium in Rome.

Entries from Chinese athletes and other Asian national teams are not currently available. Local interest will rise if home athletes appear on the start list.

2026 World Triathlon Cup Results So Far

The list below covers the 2026 World Cups with confirmed results in the sources checked.

  • Lanzarote, 14 March: Nina Eim (GER) won the women's race five seconds clear of Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR), with Laura Lindemann (GER) third. David Cantero (ESP) won the men's race, and Jawad Abdelmoula (MAR) took the men's bronze.
  • Haikou, 21 March: Oliver Conway (GBR), the World U23 champion, won the men's race. Diana Isakova (AIN) won the women's race. Hugo Milner (GBR) took the men's bronze, and Sophie Malowiecki (AUS) reached her first World Cup podium.
  • Chengdu, 9 May: Luke Willian (AUS) held off Nils Serre Gehri (FRA) by one second, with Tyler Mislawchuk (CAN) a second further back in third. Laura Lindemann won a three-way sprint against Valentina Riasova (AIN) and Kate Waugh (GBR).
  • Huatulco, 14 June: Tyler Mislawchuk won the men's race in 53:20, ahead of Sullivan Middaugh (USA) and Vinicius Avi Santana (BRA). Ana Maria Torres won the women's race at home for Mexico, her first World Cup gold.
  • Tiszaujvaros, 27 to 28 June: Csongor Lehmann (HUN) extended his winning run in his hometown. Fanni Szalai (HUN) won the women's race, with Tara Sosinski (AUS) and Taylor Knibb (USA) completing the podium.
  • Edmonton, 18 July: Solomon Okrafo-Smart won the men's race for his first World Cup victory. Taylor Knibb won the women's race. Marta Kropkó (HUN) was second and Paola Sacchi (ITA) third.
  • Rio de Janeiro, 2 August: Braxton Legg (USA) and Zuzana Michalickova won on the Copacabana circuit. Both races were decided by one second.
  • Asuncion, 9 August: Dylan McCullough (NZL) won the men's race and Danielle Orie (USA) won the women's race, each by a few seconds.
  • Rome, 3 October: Alex Yee (GBR) won the men's race, and Diana Isakova beat Tilda MÃ¥nsson (SWE) in the women's race.

The Lima World Cup was scheduled for 22 and 23 August. World Triathlon still lists it, but I found no confirmed World Cup results. Reports from that weekend describe an Americas Triathlon Cup, where Carter Stuhlmacher (USA) won the men's race. Treat Lima as unconfirmed until you check the official results page. If you also follow off-road racing, our UCI Mountain Bike World Series results from Soldier Hollow cover another strong endurance field.

Recent Form: What Rome Showed

Rome is the closest guide to current form. It used the sprint distance, so it is not a direct preview of Beijing. Over sixty men started, and many buoys made the swim hard to read. Yee lost time early and recovered it on the run. By the end of the second bike lap, fourteen men had joined a leading pack, and the run then decided the race.

The women's race came down to a sprint finish between Isakova and MÃ¥nsson, after home favourite Bianca Seregni made a decisive early move. Beijing's 10 km run is twice the length of the Rome run, which gives a strong runner more road to recover.

Rome produced a sprint finish in the women's race and a run comeback in the men's race.

WTCS 2026 Final Results and Standings

The World Triathlon Championship Series is the top level above the World Cup. It ended in Pontevedra, Spain, from 23 to 27 September.

  • Women: Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA) won all five of her Series starts in 2026 and reclaimed the world title with a dominant Grand Final win. Georgia Taylor-Brown and Kate Waugh, both from Great Britain, completed the Grand Final podium.
  • Men: Matthew Hauser (AUS) won a sprint finish against Vasco Vilaça (POR) after both were given 1:39:31. Vilaça's second place secured his first world title. Alex Yee was third, four seconds back, and Ricardo Batista (POR) was fourth.
  • Other final standings: Miguel Hidalgo (BRA) finished fifth in the final WTCS standings with 3,152.18 points, and Taylor Spivey (USA) finished eighth with 3,601.19 points.

A WTCS win is worth 1,000 points, and the Grand Final win is worth 1,250. An athlete's final score combines the best four regular season results with the Grand Final result. This was the last Final under the WTCS name, and the circuit becomes the T50 World Championship Tour from 2027.

Rankings and Olympic Qualification Points

World Cup results now count toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic qualification race. A World Cup winner earns 500 points toward the LA 2028 Individual Olympic Qualification Ranking, and the qualifying period runs from 18 May 2026 to 18 May 2028. Beijing is a World Cup, so athletes can expect the same scale. World Triathlon had not published a Beijing-specific points table in the sources checked. Confirm it in the athlete guide.

A current top 10 for the Olympic qualification ranking or the World Rankings was not available when this article was written. One June snapshot, after Tiszaujvaros, placed Danielle Orie 22nd in the very early Olympic qualification rankings. That figure is out of date. Check the live tables at triathlon.org before you quote any ranking number.

For prize money, Beijing is "Information is not currently available." For reference, the Tiszaujvaros World Cup paid US$60,000 in total, with US$7,500 to each winner. Do not assume Beijing pays the same.

Main Storylines

Five storylines shape the Beijing World Cup. They come from the calendar and the 2026 results, not from speculation.

A return to Beijing. The city last hosted top-level World Triathlon racing in 2011. The race links the sport back to the 2008 Olympic triathlon.

A new venue. Yanqi Lake is not the 2008 Olympic site. Athletes will race on a course with no previous World Cup history, which makes preparation and course knowledge important.

Champions after the season finale. Beaugrand and Vilaça arrive as the new WTCS world champions, and Yee and Hauser finished at the front of the Grand Final. Whether they race in Beijing is not confirmed.

The race to LA 2028. Every World Cup now awards points toward the Olympic qualification ranking. Athletes who won earlier in the season, such as Isakova, Mislawchuk and Knibb, can build on those points.

A standard distance test. Most 2026 World Cups used the sprint distance. Beijing uses the longer format. Athletes who rely on a fast swim and bike may face a strong run field, and athletes with a fast 10 km run get a bigger window to win.

Do not expect a particular winner. Triathlon results shift with the swim pack, the bike group and the run. Any prediction before the start list is guesswork.

Beijing in the 2026 World Triathlon Cup Calendar

The World Triathlon Cup is a circuit of single races across the world. It sits below the World Triathlon Championship Series. Athletes use World Cups to earn points, gain race experience and build their season.

World Triathlon has also scheduled a women's cup in Dubai on 5 and 6 December. China has a large role in this calendar. Haikou, Chengdu and Beijing all host World Cups, and Weihai hosted a WTCS race on 29 August. China hosts major events in several sports this season, and our China Masters 2026 badminton preview covers another one. Hong Kong also hosts a World Cup in November, and you can read the World Fencing Championships results from Hong Kong on LankaSport.

Check the World Triathlon event pages for any date changes. The calendar has moved several times this year, and some events were postponed.

Next Race After Beijing: World Triathlon Cup Tongyeong

The next World Cup is in Tongyeong, South Korea, one week after Beijing.
